Powerflute awards two contracts to Honeywell

09.10.2006

Honeywell has signed a contract to supply an automation upgrade to Powerflute's paper machine in Kuopio, Finland. Under terms of the agreement, Honeywell will install its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), a Da Vinci quality control system and a Devronizer steambox. The project is part of Powerflute's program to boost the mill's production efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and improve quality management. The upgraded system was scheduled for startup in September 2006.

Honeywell also won a multi-year Life Cycle Management agreement, which will help the mill continually update control systems, maximize asset effectiveness and improve production efficiency in the long-term.

"Honeywell conducted an extensive analysis throughout our mill to identify the best methods to increase our machine's drying capacity and reduce our energy consumption at the same time," says Ian Halliday, Powerflute's managing director. "During the analysis, Honeywell also ascertained the machine's quality control needs and produced a proposal stating the quality improvements that could be realized using the latest measurement technology."

The new steam box will boost the machine's drying capacity significantly. Higher capacity and new, efficient controls will allow an increase in production volume while minimizing the consumption of energy. The combined solution will also control paper moisture, thickness and basis weight.
